stay near the Yorkshire Dales in pet friendly self catering cottages RiponRipon is one of North Yorkshire’s gems and you and your family (plus your pet) will enjoy the area’s many attractions. Pet-friendly accommodation is available and the owners of holiday cottages know that families want to take their beloved pet with them.

Ripon is a delightful place for a break and is surrounded by family attractions. Market Day is Thursday in the Market Square, where you can also see the town’s very own Obelisk.

Of course, part of your fun will be to walk the dog in a new environment. A recommended dog- friendly walk, stretching seven miles, will certainly blow the cobwebs away. The Ripon and Studley Royal Walk begins in the centre of the city. Dogs enjoy having lots of paddles en-route and there are no stiles to negotiate. Several paths are closed off, so you can take the dog off the lead on these sections. In July and August, dogs need to be on a short lead because of fawning at Studley Royal Park. After your exertions, you and your dog can repair to one of the dog welcoming pubs.

Studley Royal Park and Water Garden (dogs welcome on short lead) is a grand day out with lots to see. This World Heritage Site contains many acres of scenic countryside, a Georgian water park, a deer park and the 12th century Fountains Abbey.

For more grandeur, Newby Hall & Gardens (dogs not permitted except guide dogs) contains fine examples of tapestries and Chippendale furniture. The 17th century grand house is a family home, designed to imitate Sir Christopher Wren’s style.

Ripon Cathedral is rather magnificent outside and inside. Take your time to look at the interior’s features, such as the medieval woodcarvings. Its history is fascinating, being the fourth church to be erected on the site. Its cathedral gives Ripon its status as a city, although some say it is the smallest city in England.

If your younger family members want to let off some steam, Lightwater Valley theme park is nearby. Brave souls will enjoy the extreme rides that include The Ultimate rollercoaster. Entrance also includes the Lightwater Valley Falconry, where you will see eagles, falcons and owls.

Ripon Racecourse has such a lovely setting that it is known as the Garden Racecourse. They don’t want anyone to miss the action here, so there is a giant screen showing every race. Food served in the dining areas includes snacks, gourmet dishes and fresh seafood.

For an insight into how justice worked in the 18th and 19th centuries, The Courtyard Museum has displays and an audio visual presentation, housed in the former court building.
